What are Shopify eligibility requirements to sell subscriptions?

Payment Gateway” is one of the most noticeable limitations set by Shopify. To use subscriptions, you must be using one of the following gateways as your payment gateway:

  • Stripe, which is only available to some merchants
(If you do want to see if your business is eligible to enable Stripe through Shopify, you can reach out to Shopify's live support to have this request escalated. Follow this link: Shopify Help Center)

  • You can also use accelerated checkouts such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or PayPal to purchase subscriptions.

You can't use local payment methods such as Klarna, mollie iDEAL, and Sofort to purchase subscriptions.

You manage all your store's payment methods in the “Payment Providers” section of Shopify admin.

Also, subscription products are only supported on the Online Store and Custom Storefront sales channels.

How do I know if my store is eligible to sell subscriptions?

If your shop doesn't meet Shopify's eligibility requirements, we'll show you a banner when you are creating a Subscription Plan in Subify:

If you don't see this banner, your store is eligible to sell subscriptions.
